RE: The Vietnam Thread - Malo - 12-03-2017

I'm in HCM now, I should only be staying here for a few weeks (plan to leave before Feb), but would like to get some vocab going.

There's Duolingo but it actually isn't well made for Vietnamese. Lacks pronunciation of many words etc. Somehow they did a shitty job on this one.

Then there's this channel which someone on RVF recommended: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpDgPu_Hq9ZysP4cuTG8OI4BrLQsTDoWT

I'll try to work with that one. Problem is it's hard to find the time since I have work going as well.

Only arrived on Thursday, didn't even go out this weekend. I'm staying right near Bui Vien, which I figured would be a good choice for a first timer. It's airbnb and cancellation flexible so I guess I can change my mind if needed, but for now it's ok (the flat is a somewhat noisy though).

I did check out a couple of malls (Saigon Center, Vincom) and they are nice, although a bit claustrophobic for daygame. Could hardly get any good opportunities ('one on one' setups with girls), which are usually plentiful in other countries. But will try again.

Will try the online stuff as well, see how it all goes.

Definitely a lot of cute girls here, their style is much better than Bangkok (in my opinion) and they seem more confident and down to earth. Dress much hotter too. Infrastructure seems visibly more lacking compared to Bangkok or Manila (although internet definitely seems much better than in both, so far).

Will try to update.. if anyone is up for a drink feel free to PM as well Smile

Cool will try to PM tomorrow, some other dudes are also keen on meeting for a beer although didn't set up an exact datetime yet.

Fired up Tinder, getting ok responses but didn't set up any dates yet. Also tried Bumble => POS, mostly foreign girls and not a single match, while I got plenty of matches on Tinder. Same was in Bangkok by the way. Will try Badoo and Cupid later on. Got work to do as well so unfortunately that slows me down dramatically.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-04-2017

Tinder is ok, but my picture is not as optimal as it could be. So could be better. There are lots of cute to hot girls on Tinder.

Any recommendations for learning?

Does it matter if it is North vs South accent?

I still have another 5 weeks before I move out to HCMC, so I got plenty of time to get the basics.

1) Learn alphabet / pronunciation (youtube)

2) Learn basic grammar structures

3) Make a spread sheet with 200-500ish words (basic elementary word list you need) plus numbers / counting. Remove words you wouldn't use much and add words you would use more. Think about what shit you want to talk about or possible answers to questions.

http://funwithlanguages.tumblr.com/post/105572981908/you-can-say-a-surprising-amount-with-300-words

http://ogden.basic-english.org/words.html

https://fluent-forever.com/the-method/vocabulary/base-vocabulary-list/

4) Get the list you make translated by a local (use girls you pipeline)

5) Have a local make an audio file saying the words

6) Study the word list and listen to the audio file

Learn the Southern pronunciation / words / sound

To be more specific

200 Nouns
https://aprendemasingles.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/200-most-common-english-nouns.pdf

100 Verbs

50 Adjectives
https://www.fluentu.com/blog/spanish/common-spanish-adjectives/

25 Adverbs
25 Preprositions

Add another 100 nouns

Then will have 500 words to hammer out. If you learn all that you will be a very solid base to work with.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-05-2017

Met Malo tonight. Interesting fellow as far as where he is from and has lived.

We went to Lighthouse which was not that busy surprisingly as it was ladies night. Usually a good crowd on Tuesday.

After there we went to Lush for ladies night. This place is always packed. I ran into some girls I knew at Lighthouse and we went with them and 2 guys to Lush. One of the guys gets kicked out not long after we arrive.

So we decided to go to Apo Now. The hooker club stays open late and has top40 music.

Fucking dudes I was with bought a bottle and gave me some so I felt obligated to pay for my half. Went to the bar to see how much a bottle of Jack Daniels was. 100 dollars. Fuck me.

Fun but expensive night.

Havent been out in a while.

I still need to check out 2-3 places then I will write up my updated Saigon datasheet.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Marky0509 - 12-07-2017

Hi guys, going to HMC next week for a month. Any suggestions for xmas and new years eve? I am also looking for wingmen while in Saigon.
I have pipelined with about 5 girls now. Should I rent a scooter as soon as I arrive? Any other suggestions?

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-07-2017

If you mean Western New Years / Christmas then nothing changes in Vietnam.

The only time people leave is Asian New Years / Tet in February.

Yes you should rent a scooter right after you arrive. Use uber bike 1st 2-3 days just to get a feel how it works. Then rent one from someone on facebook.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-07-2017

Was thinking of going abroad for Christmas holiday but after looking at prices, would be much better to just travel in Vietnam.

You can get round trip tickets to Nha Trang for 35 dollars. That's insane.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-09-2017

Just booked tickets and airbnb for Nha Trang for 3 nights during our Christmas break.

Round trip tickets were 50 dollars. Then I booked a newly built apartohouse for 18 dollars a night near the action.

Already pipelining girls in Nha Trang. There is one 18 year old FREAK that lives there. Very cute sexy.

Please let me snag that Lord lol

I have been living in Vietnam from 2003 until 2007 and I couldn't take the traffic any longer. Nowadays it is outright deadly I wouldn't even set a toe into these poisonous fumes nowadays covering the entire city

No mask crew checking in.

Also never in traffic jams due to my unusual working hours.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - lighter - 12-12-2017

Did you ever do an in person TEFL course?

Or did the online one from EnjoyTEFL work fine for getting a work permit?

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-13-2017

Man, just saw a nice looking big one bedroom apartment with kitchen, bath etc in D7 for 280 a month. Alittle far from my work though.

I am thinking about changing apartments as I want a better deal.

@Lighter

I did the online EnjoyTefl course. It works just fine for getting work permit.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-14-2017

The apartment I mentioned yesterday for 280 was way down in the sticks / bottom of district 7. So I had to pass.

Another guy in D7 (this one located at the top closer to D1) messaged me saying he has rooms. This guy owns the penthouse of this new 30 story apartment building.

He has converted the penthouse into 18 studio apartments. I decided to rent one of the serviced rooms with a balcony, kitchen and wc for 350.

That is a pretty darn good deal. It's not easy to find a new nice looking studio with kitchen in a house for 350. Much less one in a high rise with a balcony and view.

I will post some pics when I move in on Monday.

RE: The Vietnam Thread - Dash - 12-18-2017

Fucking lost my 2nd phone in Vietnam. Was driving to my new apartment and was wearing gym shorts. Put my phone in my short's pocket. As I am driving a dude pulls up and says I dropped my phone. Turn around and someone had already swiped it. Bloody hell. Got home and did the find my phone and say where it was. Was on a small side street like 20 minutes from where I dropped it. As I am contemplating trying to go get it he shuts it off or removes sim card. I would be amazed if it didn't get shattered and crushed from the fall and all the motorbikes and cards that were on the road with me. 700 dollars I pissed down the drain. Smh

RE: The Vietnam Thread - jolojolo - 12-18-2017

Hey guys.
Just found your site a few days ago but reading thru it and been thoroughly entertained.
Thought I would contribute my trip this past Jan. to Saigon.
If you want the full data sheet, I can definitely add a lot more but wanted to keep it short, even tho this is pretty long.

(long post)
I went to Saigon this past Jan 26-Feb 5th, 2017 (wow. Almost a year ago now).

I was warned not to go there during Tet (Vietnamese New Year) since a lot of the clubs/ venues would be closed for about a week and many people that live in Saigon travel back to their hometown to visit and stay with family. I didn't really have a choice considering my friend had already booked his flight and picked the dates out.

A little about myself- I work in finance in New York and have been to many countries and travel with friends or meet friends in destinations, mostly in Asia.  Early 40’s and traveled to Asia way too much.  First trip to SEA was when I was in college and have been to Asia at least once every other year and closer to once every year for the last 10 years.

I landed in Saigon late afternoon on a Thursday and headed to my hotel to meet my friend who had checked in a day earlier.  He travels to Saigon twice a year recommended we stay at the Harmony Hotel (clean/ friendly staff/ good location, $60/night, guest friendly-$20 extra charge).  While the hotel was clean, I felt like we could have paid a little more for something much nicer.

As soon as I landed and jump into a cab, I felt the energy of the city and despite my inability to fall asleep on flights and definitely jet lagged, I was rejuvenated and ready to go out.

We were told some of the places we wanted to go would not be open.  I just wanted to get out and have a drink and relax the first night.  We ended up at Chill Skybar.  The rooftop bar was nice and had fantastic views.  The place was less than ½ full but there were definitely people out.

There were 4 of us out the first night and the original goal was to keep it tame but once I got up there, I felt like I had to go after it since I only had a little more than a week to party.  Don’t remember exactly what the prices were for the drinks but I remember it was kind of pricey, not for Saigon prices but pricey in general.  I looked at the drink menu and found the bottles a much better value.  I have a problem that once I start to drink and feel good, there’s this chemical in alcohol that makes me think I’m as rich as Bill Gates.  4 bottles of champagne and two bottles of hard liquor later, I figured it was time to call it a night. While we were at the table, I went over to the circle bar and chatted up a couple girls.  Got their number to set up a possibility to meet them during the week if we got bored.

There’s a lot more to the whole week but to not make it 20 pages, I’ll tell you about one encounter and if you guys are still interested, I can follow up with a couple more stories about the trip.

On day 6, we meet my friends good friend (European that has lived in Saigon for 10 years) and some of his other friends at Fox Beer Club.  Fox Beer Club is a multi- storied outdoor beer bar with LOUD music that serves food and drinks, mostly beer.  It’s rather cheap, fun and a good place to get the night started.  We got there around 8pm and by the time we met up, the place was at least 90% full on each of the 3 or 4 floors.  It was the first day after TET where people went out and I think most people in Saigon had the itch to get out and drink and party.  Not sure if the beer club is normally that loud but it probably didn’t help that the only long table we can find for 6 people was right next to the speakers.

During this time, the friendly wait staff would come around and take your order and bring your food/drinks.  They had these promotional beer girls wearing Budweiser outfits that were very form fitting (think Hooters shirts before they became PC).  These were definitely the hottest girls at the beer club.  Most of the people there came in mixed groups and I was trying to find the pockets of girls that walked in.  As I was looking around, my eyes met this smoking Budweiser girl.  I smiled at her and she smiled back.  I called her over and we hung out and drank and talked and laughed for the next two hours.  Got her number.  I was definitely tipsy but felt a lot of chemistry.  She was laughing at my jokes and the communication between us was awesome.  So I thought.

We text back and forth and agree to meet 2 days later.  By this time, I had switched my hotel to the Park Hyatt (which is think is the nicest hotel in the city).  We decide to meet at the coffee shop across from the hotel.  I meet her there and she’s even hotter than I remember.  She’s wearing a tight dress and had an unbelievable body.  I greet her with a hug and a smile and ask her what she wants to drink.  She looks at me like I’m speaking a different language.   It wasn’t too long before I found out she speaks absolutely no English.  “ How did we communicate so well a few nights ago and how did we spend 2 hours together without being able to communicate?” was the thought running in my head.  So basically, the conversation revolved around her phone using Vietnamese to English and mine English to Vietnamese.

Turns out we were both hungry so we went to my hotel where they were having afternoon tea.  She was definitely impressed with the hotel and lobby.  At the afternoon tea, we were definitely the quietest table and it might have even looked like we were fighting since we weren’t talking and only texting.  Anyway, hand gestures and a lot of smiles helped.  I showed her around the hotel but I was sure there was no way anything was going to happen.  I decided to not even try anything and she had told me she had to get to work around 5 and invited me to meet her back there.

Since it was now the last night before taking an early flight back, we decided the plan was to have pre drinks and food at Fox then head to Chill Skybar.  We went to Fox and I saw the girl again who was surprised that I showed up.  After drinking and eating there, I told her to meet me at Chill.

She meets me at Chill and we start drinking and dancing.  We were both kinda drunk and it was a little after 1am.  I decided there was 0% chance I was going to do anything with her and knew that there was absolutely no way the hotel would let me bring a girl up, especially a Vietnamese girl at that time.  I tell everyone that I’m leaving and have to catch a flight.  She tells me she is leaving too and says she will drive me on her scooter back to my hotel.  We leave and im sitting on the back of here scooter.  I was like an Octopus and she did not give any resistance.  A few minutes later, were back near the hotel and I tell her to stop across the street.   We make out for a while and then unexpectedly, she said “Hotel”.  At that point, im getting ready for a fight with the front desk (would be my 2nd one of the trip, different hotel).  We walk in and low and behold, nobody is at the front desk.  I sneak her up and game over.

 quick thoughts-

I love Asian girls and think that Korean, Japanese, Chinese girls are the hottest and SEA girls don’t really do it for me.  With that said, the hottest Vietnamese girls are hotter than any Korean, Japanese, or Chinese girls.  I found the majority of Vietnamese girls I saw to be ehhhhhhh at best.  During the day, I would say that I saw less than 5% hot girls walking around, even in the malls.  At night, the ratio of smoking hot girls went up significantly to over 50%.

I think the hottest girls I saw were at Qui Lounge, mostly Vietnamese.  Lot of hot tourists mixed with locals at Chill.
Not really into the backpacker area so didnt go there.

There’s a lot more to talk about but don’t want to bore you or waste any more of your time.

Thanks for reading.
